Dear Congressperson/Senator name,

Subject: excessive (over five year) delays for permanent residents to be united with their foreign spouse/children.

I am writing to you as a friend of a family who is undergoing hardship as a result of numerical limitations on the spouse/children of permanent resident immigrant visa.  They have been separated for several years now.  It takes in excess of five years to get this visa.  Beneficiaries are not allowed to visit the petitioner while they wait.

I urge you to support legislation to end family separation.  It is often said that family unity is the cornerstone of the American immigration system.  Let us not deny this to our future citizens and their families.  Let them not have to decide between country and family.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
