H.R. 1823 introduced — reinstates the V visa

April 26, 2005

Congressman Andrews (D-NJ-1) and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX-18) introduced H.R. 1823 today.  It reinstates the V visa by postponing its sunset date to January 2011.  Further, it reduces the waiting period from 3 years to 6 months.

UniteFamilies.org has been working closely with Congressman Andrews and thanks him for introducing the bill.  The bill squarely addresses the problem of achieving family unity.  It does not increase the number of immigrant visas, does not allow people to jump the line, and does not bypass any security checks.  Unlike other bills (H.R. 257, S. 1033), it does not include any other controversial provisions.  By reinstating a visa category that has already been created, it merely acknowledges that the family unification problem has not yet been addressed.

Those who have been following the issue over the last couple of years will notice that this bill is identical to H.R. 3701 that was introduced by Congressman Andrews in the last session of Congress.  That bill never passed the House Immigration Subcommittee.  We urge Congress to move on H.R. 1823 and enact it as soon as possible.  The anguish caused by family separation must end now.

UniteFamilies.org urges you to write or call your Congressperson and Senators and request them to enact this measure.
