« back to news and press releases Senator Clinton's press conference May 23, 2007 Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) held a press conference today introducing her amendment (S.A. 1183 to S. 1348/S.A. 1150). The amendment reclassifies spouses and children of permanent residents as immediate relatives, thus exempting them from numerical visa limits. Currently, there is a waiting period of over five years due to numerical limits on this visa. The amendment is to the Senate/White House compromise which leaves the numerical limit in place while eliminating other legal family immigration categories. Senator Clinton introduced the amendment to expedite family unity for nuclear families of legal immigrants. The amendment was cosponsored by Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ). Senator Clinton met with one of our affected members, Amir Nikpouri, and our strategic consultant, Paul Donnelly. We urge the Senate to consider the amendment and approve it.
